Our intrepid adventurers have been asked by their associate Gundren Rockseeker to escort a wagon of supplies to Phandalin. Gundren, excited to get to Phandalin, left ahead of the adventurers with his associate Sildar Hallwinter, a member of The Order of the Lord’s Alliance who has been sent to investigate the disappearance of Iarno Albreck in Phandalin.

The party came to two horses, who they identified as belonging to Sildar and Gundren. They were discussing what to do next when they were ambushed by goblins hiding along the road. The fight was short, but brutal. The party determined where the goblins had come from, and followed their trail into the woods.

After dodging a few traps, the party came to Cragmaw Hideout, where they believed Sildar and Gundren have been taken. Several battles (and making some wolf friends along the way) the party found Sildar, though he’d been beaten pretty badly.

Eventually coming to an agreement with Yeemik, the goblin second-in-command, they headed off to kill Klarg, the goblin in charge.

With the help of their wolf friends and Sildar, they defeated the bugbear Klarg and found his stash, as well as supplies meant for the Lionshield Coster in Phandalin. Though they did not find Gundren they did find out that he was taken to Cragmaw Castle, though they were unable to find its location.

The party then packed up the spoils of victory as well as Klarg’s head to present to Yeemik, but when they exited the cave Yeemik was no where to be found, upsetting several members of the party. They then headed to Phandalin to deliver their supplies.

Phandalin

The party returned the stolen supplies to Linene at the Lionshield Coster, who was very grateful. It’s here that they first learned of the Redbrand ruffians who have been terrorizing the town. During the course of the night, they heard the same thing from several shopkeeps, though all with their own views on the matter.

After resting at the inn and learning several rumors over shared ale, the party headed to the Miner’s Exchange, where they met Halia Thornton, who had more knowledge and was willing to talk much more openly about the redbrand threat than anyone else the party had met at this point.

It is here that they learned that the leader of the redbrands is named Glasstaff and that Halia would like it very much if the party would fetch some letters he possessed. In exchange, she would give them information about the redband’s hideout.

When leaving the Miner’s Exchange the party was jumped by a group of redbrands who called out their rogue as having been told to never come back, which surprised and upset the rest of the group that he had been hiding that from them. After a tense fight, the redbrands lay dead and the party looted them of their stuff.

After recovering from the encounter with the red brands, the adventurers proceeded to the town hall where, after learning of an orc menace near Wyvern Tor and speaking briefly with the townmaster, the adventurers finally reunited with Sildar Hallwinter. Sildar still had not been able to locate Iarno and asked the adventurers for their continued assistance.

After leaving the town hall, Osborn Tealeaf lamented that the description of Iarno is remarkably similar to Glasstaff. Baring this in mind the adventurers decided to follow up on a lead about a mine or tunnel that a local by the name of Carp had recently discovered in the woods.

After speaking with Carp, the adventurers found the hidden tunnel and proceeded in to what they soon discovered to be the ruins of Tresendar Manor.

Upon entering the ruins, Loktra was immediately stricken by unpleasant thoughts flooding her mind. Not finding anything suspicious, the adventurers began exploring and quickly stumbled upon a room with three bugbears and a goblin.

After defeating the bugbears, as well as a few red brands who were aroused by the ruckus, the group questioned the goblin who quickly pledged his loyalty to the adventurers.

Soon the group discovered a laboratory containing several magical materials and some correspondence to Iarno. After reading the letters it became apparent that Iarno and Glasstaff are in fact the same person. The letters were signed with a black spider.

While investigating the laboratory, Asheron discovered a secret door which opened into a hallway. The group decided to split up, but no sooner had they done so, Loktra was pounced upon by a nasty psychic eyeball creature.

After a brutal battle, the group decided to stick together and investigate the secret passage. The group discovered an armory where they donned some red brand cloaks, then found a crypt where three skeletons stood against three sarcophagi. The goblin implored the group not to enter, and they agreed to head back to the main hallway. However, Xyromyra was so enthralled by the thought of killing some undead that she proceeded into the crypt anyway.

While Thereon and Loktra continued down the main corridor, Xyromyra, Osborn, and Asheron battled the three skeletons.

Realizing that they were separated from the rest of the party, Loktra and Thereon decided to continue down the main corridor, but it quickly came to a dead end. Thereon decided to investigate the dead end while Loktra returned to the crypt.

Loktra arrived at the crypt just as the battle ended, and after exchanging details of what had happened, Xyromyra, Asheron, and Osborn began raiding the sarcophagi, to the outrage of Loktra. She immediately left the crypt to rejoin Thereon.

Xyromyra, Osborn , and Asheron finished looting and then entered a door within the crypt. There they encountered more red brands, but within the room they could see two prison cells with a woman and teen girl in one and a young boy in the other. The group was worn down by now, but they emerged victorious from their battle with the red brands and rescued the prisoners, who they learned were the wife and children of Fell Goodfellow, who had been murdered by the red brands.

Meanwhile, Thereon had discovered a secret passage, and he and Loktra continued in. There they met two red brands, but due to the red brand gear they were wearing, Loktra and Thereon were accepted as one of them. After learning that Glasstaff had fled the compound, Loktra attempted to dispatch the red brand enemies. Being more battle wary than they realized, Loktra and Thereon were being thoroughly beaten, but their goblin companion, who up to this point has run and hid at every encounter, threw himself upon the last red brand standing. He was no match for the red brand and swiftly met his end, but it bought enough time for Loktra to deliver a finishing blow to the red brand.

As Asheron, Osborn , and Xyromyra led the newly freed Fell’s family to safety, the young lady was so overcome with desire for safety that she ran ahead of the group where she fell into a trap and died. The wails of her mother alerted Thereon and Loktra that someone was nearby, and quickly found themselves reunited with the rest of the party.

Glasstaff

After the adventurers made it out of the ruins of transcendar Manor and escorting Fell’s remaining family home, they returned to the inn for a good night’s rest.

In the morning they returned Iarno’s correspondence to Halia at the miner’s exchange. She was dissatisfied that the adventurers failed to kill “Glasstaff” but agreed to pay half the reward for the letters, and will pay the rest when Glasstaff is dead.

The group then went to the town hall to fill Sildar in on what they had learned thus far. He also was dissatisfied, and wanted either Iarno brought to him alive “FOR JUSTICE!” or proof of his treachery and death.

The adventurers returned to the ruins of transcendar Manor, and despite some foul weather, Xyromyra was able to pick up a trail leading north from the ruins.

After nearly a full day of travel, the group saw the remnants of a campground ahead. Osborn decided to use his skills at sneaking to go investigate the camp while the rest of the gang took cover.

After investigating the campground and finding nothing suspicious, he sat to rest. Soon he heard a voice from the tree line, demanding that he and his party turn back, or face great peril. He saw no one but recognized the voice as that of Glasstaff. He then heard the shuffling of someone fleeing.

By this time the rest of the group became suspicious, but they arrived at the campsite after Glasstaff fled. Undeterred, they decided to make camp there for the night and continue their pursuit in the morning.

Osborn took the first watch, and not long after everyone dozed off, Osborn heard the voice of Glasstaff telling him, “I warned you to turn back! Now face your doom!” Osborn jumped back in shock just as two hands appeared beside him, attempting to shock him but missing. As Glasstaff materialized beside Osborn, the rest of the group was startled awake and jumped up, prepared for battle. Glasstaff quickly found himself overwhelmed by Theren’s magic fireballs and was cooked from the inside out.

After a quick and decisive battle, the group loaded up Glasstaff’s body and returned to town. First they informed Halia, who paid what she promised but asked to speak with Osborn and Asheron privately. While they talked, the rest of the party took Glasstaff’s body to Sildar, who confirmed his identity as Iarno. Sildar then asked to speak to Loktra privately.

Soon the group gathered at the inn for some dinner and rest before setting out for more adventures!

Thundertree

The adventurers set out from Phandelin to Thundertree. They arrived after a few days’ travel, and among the ruined buildings they noticed a relatively intact home with shuttered windows. They discovered that the home was occupied by an old druid who filled the adventurers in on the goings on about town – including ash zombies, living foliage, and a dragon. With Xyromyraanxious to slay some undead, the group set out to clean up the town.

After clearing several ruined buildings the group came upon another intact home, where they found a small coven of dragon worshippers. The adventurers persuaded them to take them along to meet the dragon.

Upon arriving at the dragon’s den, the dragon worshippers quickly turned on the adventurers, offering them as a sacrifice to the dragon. Having no interest in being dragon food, the adventurers fought back and defeated the dragon worshippers, leaving them face to face with a dragon. They tried to persuade the dragon to let them leave in peace, but the dragon preferred to try and eat the group. After a devastating battle, the dragon found himself so angered and confused that he saw no choice but to flee.

Weary from battle, the group returned to the druid’s home to rest and recover before setting out for cragmaw castle.

Cragmaw Castle

After clearing Thundertree of undead and a dragon, the druid gave the adventurers directions to Cragmaw Castle. They set out at once, in hopes of finding Gundren Rockseeker and the map to wave echo cavern.

The group arrived at Cragmaw Castle and began scout the perimeter, where Asheron, Loktra, and Osborn quickly found themselves in hot water.

After a devastating battle against a score of goblins and hobgoblins, Theron located the desecrated shrine that he was tasked with cleansing, and after performing his ritual, the gang continued their search for Gundren.

The gang cleared all but two rooms – one of which contained an owlbear. In an effort to surprise the foes within the final room, the gang split up so they could enter through two doors simultaneously. Their plan backfired though, as a night elf was waiting just within one of the doors and immediately knocked Osborn and Theron unconscious before fleeing.

Xyromyra, Loktra, and Asheron battled the remaining bugbear and wolf while attempting to revive Osborn and Theron. In the midst of the exchange, two more hobgoblins attacked from behind Loktra, and the night elf returned to release the owlbear.

The adventurers barely survived the exchange but emerged victorious, only to find Gundren dead with his throat slit.

Loktra, determined to find a way to save Gundren, insisted that they take his corpse back to Phandelin, in hopes that Sildar would know a way to revive him.

Along the way back to Phandelin, the adventurers encountered a group of hobgoblins en route to Cragmaw Castle. Two of the hobgoblins ran away, but the remaining were quickly slain. As the group recovered they heard some commotion in the distance. Asheron, Theron, and Osborn snuck out to the woods to investigate and were shocked to see Sildar in the woods, standing over the corpses of the two hobgoblins who ran away.

Loktra and Xyromyra heard Sildar’s voice and immediately headed over. They explained to Sildar the condition of Gundren, and Sildar said he would return with gundren’s corpse to neverwinter to try and find a way to revive him.

Weary from battle and travel, the group decided to return to Phandelin for a hot meal and rest before setting out to cave echo cavern. While in town they sought out the town master, who Sildar said would have the reward for finding Gundren. When they arrived at the town master’s hall, much to their shock, they were greeted by Sildar himself!

The gang quickly realized that they had been duped by a doppleganger. Furthermore, Sildar informed them that he believes that Glasstaff had been cloned!

Disturbed by these revelations, the gang decided to return to Cragmaw Castle to try and track down the doppelganger, but they were unsuccessful, so they decided to set their sights on Wave Echo Cavern.

Entering Wave Echo Cavern

With the map now in their possession, the party was able to locate the entrance to Wave Echo Cavern after a few days travel. During that time, Xyromyra befriended a new companion, Mary Jane, a giant wasp to replace Peter Parker who was killed by the owlbear at Cragmaw Castle.

Inside the entrance, a tunnel led them deep into the mountain, until is opened up into an open area. Inside was the body of a dwarf along with supplies one would find for a mining expedition. At one end of the cavern, the floor had at some point in the past collapsed and a pit about 30 feet deep now dominated the space. Examining the body, Theren noticed that the boots of the dwarf had a magical aura, and decided they would be wasted on the corpse, so tossed his old boots aside in exchange for the unidentified dwarf’s magical footwear.

Looking closer at the pit, they noticed a rope was tied to one of the stalagmites and dangling down into the pit. Without hesitation, Loktra descended to the bottom of the pit using the rope. At the bottom, she found no apparent signs of danger and signaled the rest of the party to follow. Asheron quickly grabbed the rope and hopped over the edge, but overestimated his ability to climb and almost immediately after going over the edge lost his grip and fell nearly the entire way down the pit, landing with a thunk behind Loktra. Xyromyra and Osborn took turns riding Mary Jane to the bottom, and Theren gracefully slid down the rope, giving a wink at Asheron as his feet touched the floor.

Stirge_-_Lars_Grant-West.jpgThe tunnel the group found themselves in went to the northwest and to towards the southeast, and after a brief discussion the group headed to the south which led them to another large, open cavern. This area appeared to be the old entrance to the mine, and was decorated with simple reliefs showing dwarves and gnomes working the mines together. Strewn about the room were dozens of skeletons of orcs, some of dwarves. In niches in the walls, about a half dozen brass lanterns sat, unlit. At least until Theren cast prestidigitation and lit all the lanterns so that Osborn (the only member of the party without the ability to see in the dark) could see, which caused the stirges the party hadn’t noticed to awaken and attack them. They suffered only minor wounds before killing the last of the tiny creatures, but Asheron could not let it go without making a few snide remarks towards Theren.

Out of this room, four tunnels exited. The one in which the party came from, and one going each of the directions of the compass. A faint green light emanated from the east, and Xyromyra volunteered to check down the hall. Riding Mary Jane, Xyromyra found the eastern tunnel led to another large chamber, this one filled with some sort of fungus that glowed an eerie green. She returned to the group and recounted what she saw, to which Loktra (drawing on her knowledge of herbalism) stated that the mushrooms in the chamber expelled poison spores to kill creatures and spread.

Not wanted to tangle with poison ’shrooms, the party elected to check the north passage, which lead to a door and more tunnels, these leading east/west. Osborn snuck up to the heavy stone door and was able to peak inside, but because of the darkness he was unable to see anything. He did, however, hear strange crunching and slurping sounds. He waved Asheron over to take a look, since Ash was able to see in the dark. Inside, Asheron noticed three ghouls, gnawing on ancient bones that had been strewn about the room.

The party hatches a plan to put an illusory wall at the door and then take turns stepping through the wall and attacking the ghouls. The plan actually went pretty well and no one took any damage, though the ghouls were killed so quickly that the illusory wall was probably fairly pointless.ghoul.png

After searching the room and finding nothing of note, the party headed down the tunnel to the east, hoping to find an alternate path around the mushroom chamber. The passage east led them to what appeared to be a large banquet hall in another large cavern. In the center, a few large tables were set up in the lower area of the room. To the east and west, the floor rose 10 feet up with stairs set into the walls and led to tunnels out of the room. As soon as the party entered the room carrying a torch, a group of seven ghouls who had been scavenging for flesh to devour charged them.

Loktra immediately charged back at the ghouls, but tripped while trying to leap over one of the tables. She struck the ghoul, but ended up flat on her back, and the starving ghouls took no time in pouncing. She deflected several blows, but there were too many to block them all. When one did finally penetrate Loktra’s defences, he situation became even more dire, as the vile magic of the ghouls took hold and paralyzed her.

The rest of the party moved quickly to slay the ghouls, but they quickly swarmed Loktra. The situation was made even more perilous when Theren blasted several of the ghouls with flames, but inadvertently set the table Loktra had tripped over on fire. Though she was not on the table, she was close enough that if the flames had continued to spread, she would be burned as well.

The party moved quickly, trying to gain the upper hand against the ghouls and save Loktra as the ghouls continued to bite and claw at her paralyzed body. The party eventually succeeded in dispatching the ghouls, but not before they had all but killed Loktra. Moving with haste, Asheron slips a healing potion past her lips, bringing Loktra back from the brink of death.

Though they had survived, the group was starting to feel their many cuts and bruises. They recalled a storage room that was free of signs of patrolling monsters and decided to take a short break to catch their breath.
